BIM Fatigue

I have BIM Fatigue.....

This is me if you talk to me about the wonders and benefits of Building Information Modeling.

And I'm a BIM Manager! Some would say a BIM Guru, the "go too" guy about BIM.!..

I'm done talking about BIM (well not really, I'm just trying to make a point). I've spoken at enough BIM conferences, made too many presentations on BIM and trained enough people on BIM.
If your not playing in my BIM sandbox get the #$% out.

Seriously.... if your not doing BIM on your project, you've missed the boat. It's gone people... left the dock. Your standing at the pier with your little bag in your hand wearing your Hawaiian Shirt saying "Where did everybody go?".

Dont talk to me about BIM (once again only making a point here, you can always talk to me about BIM) I'm suffering from BIM Fatigue.

It's all about Collaboration, Improving Project Delivery (to me that's the new IPD), working together as a team for the benefit of the project and ultimately for our own benefit. To me THAT is the truth behind BIM!

BIM is a tool, just like Revit, it's one part of a process of delivering a project. Another part is People.... and communication between people. That's BIM....

Without a collaborative team we struggle. Throw out the old outdated processes including the outdated contract's, and bidding process and let's move forward together. and this has to come from the client! We need to educate our clients of the benefits of true collaboration. I wont say "IPD" but I'm sure you get the drift...

Improving Project Delivery conference anyone? Mentioning BIM (let alone BIM Model) a fluffy kitten dies. I'm THAT serious people.

  1. So true...it no longer is a miracle it is now business as usual. I still like seeing people getting excited about it but preaching to the converted is often a waste of time!
What is exciting is pushing the technology and piggybacking with the power of other tools this is where new possibilities are emerging..
I don't think I can take another conference where the speaker has to explain the benefits of BIM 4 and 5D!

  2. LOL, I agree to both your comments. If I have to hear another explanation of 4D...!!!
Yes, I can already see an industry building around add on tools and programs supporting BIM, In my opinion I think Autodesk will leave specific tools to these developers. What excites me at the moment is Building Performance Analysis and being able to validate one design over another. Not necessarily validating exactly how a building is going to perform but using the tool to explain to out clients how one design better than another.
And then there's augmented reality, and virtual walk through's.... pretty exciting stuff.

  3. But what about the GCs and Sub-Trades?
There's a vast percentage of these companies that don't even have a BIM Hawaiian to wear or even know where the dock is!....and on top of that, they wouldn't even know how to fasten the buttons!
My main point is, the term BIM is ubiquitous to design (in Canada). There's still not enough knowledge or capability in contractor's marketplace to handle the volume of 3D design information issued. And then, I wager, there's still not enough experience in the companies that say they 'do BIM' for the conception to completion BIM process to be fully demonstrated. I say that, not to criticise, but to stimulate movement - in a better direction.
Also, I am certainly tired of 'BIM education presentations'. We all know what can be done now. The industry needs to freshen up the messaging and focus on methodologies of delivery, by examples, from companies directly....and that will stimulate more committed movement, especially in the contractor worlds.

  4. I agree, it seems that only the larger companies are embracing BIM, which is understandable due to cost, learning curve etc... sit's only a matter of time before even the smallest contractors start asking for the BIM.
We (the designers and construction companies) need to help educate and show the benefits to ease the transition for the contractors.
